Automotive Paint Product Safety
Automotive coatings and refinishing products may contain chemicals that require professional handling, controlled storage, proper ventilation, and suitable personal protective equipment.
The information on this page is general guidance only. It does not replace a product label, Technical Data Sheet, Safety Data Sheet, workplace safety program, professional training, or applicable regulations.
Read the Product Information First
Before opening, mixing, or using a product:
- Read the product label.
- Review the current Technical Data Sheet.
- Review the current Safety Data Sheet.
- Confirm the product is permitted for the location and application.
- Verify all components and mixing ratios.
- Understand first-aid and emergency procedures.
Do not use a product when its identity, instructions, or safety information is unclear.
Use Proper Ventilation
Use coatings only in a work area designed for the product and application method.
Spray operations may create vapors, mists, and airborne contaminants. Appropriate spray booths, exhaust systems, and other ventilation controls may be required.
Do not apply professional automotive coatings in an enclosed or poorly ventilated area.
Wear Appropriate Protective Equipment
Required protection depends on the product and application.
The Safety Data Sheet and workplace hazard assessment may require:
- Respiratory protection
- Chemical-resistant gloves
- Eye and face protection
- Protective clothing
- Appropriate footwear
- Additional workplace controls
Respirator selection, fit testing, use, and maintenance should follow applicable workplace requirements.
Prevent Fires and Ignition
Some automotive paints, reducers, solvents, and related materials may be flammable or combustible.
Keep products away from:
- Open flames
- Sparks
- Smoking
- Hot surfaces
- Unapproved electrical equipment
- Other ignition sources
Use only approved equipment in areas where flammable vapors may be present.
Store Products Correctly
Store products:
- In their original labeled containers
- With lids securely closed
- In an approved storage area
- Away from heat and ignition sources
- At temperatures recommended by the manufacturer
- Away from children and unauthorized users
- Separately from incompatible materials
Do not use a damaged, leaking, swollen, or unidentified container.
Mixing and Compatibility
Use only the hardeners, activators, reducers, additives, and components approved for the exact product.
Do not estimate mixing ratios or combine products from different systems unless the manufacturer specifically approves the combination.
Label mixed materials according to workplace requirements and observe the stated pot life.
Spills and Disposal
Follow the Safety Data Sheet and workplace spill-response procedure.
Do not pour automotive coatings, solvents, reducers, or activated materials into drains, onto the ground, or into ordinary waste unless permitted by applicable requirements.
Disposal rules vary by product and location. Contact the appropriate local waste authority or licensed disposal provider when needed.
Shipping Damage
Do not use a product that arrives leaking, punctured, severely dented, or otherwise damaged.
Move away from ignition sources, avoid direct contact, ventilate the area when it is safe to do so, and follow the emergency information on the Safety Data Sheet.
Contact Auto Paint Supply Chain with photos of the package and product.
Emergency Situations
For exposure, fire, spill, or another emergency, follow the Safety Data Sheet and contact the appropriate emergency service or poison-control resource.
